A Poem Is...
Today we discussed what a poem is....
How do poems and poetry make us feel?
We discussed that poetry is more than just a short story that rhymes!
We wrote our own poems about the colors of the rainbow to tell what the colors make us think of and how they make us feel.
We love these "A Poem Is..." videos that help us to visualize poetry!

Pumpkin Math and Literacy!
We had so much fun measuring, counting and comparing with our pumpkins brought back from Kuiper's Farm!
We used strings to estimated the circumference with strings. Was yours: too short, too long, or just right?
How tall is my pumpkin?
How many lines are on my pumpkin?
Comparing an orange and pink pumpkin...the students LOVED this!

A Peek Into Our Classroom...
A Peek Into Our Classroom...
Literacy Stations!
Our class has come so far with Literacy Stations this year! They are trying so many new and different things and they are getting to practice so many great literacy skills!
Here is a peek at a few...
Teacher Time..sorting er, ur and ir words
Vowel Sorts-practicing our long vowel teams
Shopping for Syllables!
The students LOVED this station!
They sorted the food into bags labeled "One Syllable", "Two Syllables", and "Three Syllables"
Fluency Station
Students record themselves reading a poem or a book using the Quickvoice App and then are able to listen to themselves read! Then they rate their reading based on the four factors that affect fluency: Rate, Expression, Punctuation, and Accuracy. Last, they choose one of the factors they think they need more work on.
Read to Someone...always a favorite station.
Read to Self...building reading stamina!
Writing About Reading
This week, the students chose a farm animal they they would like to learn more about. They chose a nonfiction book about that animal and read it. Then they went back into the text and wrote down three details about that animal....beginning research!

Journey's Book Stories!
Read stories from our first
Journey's Reading Book HERE.
Stories included are:
What is a Pal?
The Storm
Curious George at School
Lucia's Neighborhood
Gus Takes the Train
We have read and discussed ALL of these stories in our classroom.
This is a FANTASTIC way to practice the Words to Know as well as the Common Core State Standards of:
- I can tell the characters, setting and what happens in a story.
- I can I can tell who, what when, where, why, and how after reading nonfiction.
- I can read grade level text.
- I can tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
- I can use text features to help me understand nonfiction. (caption, photographs)
- I can find the main idea. (what the story is mostly about)
- I can use adjectives, nouns, and verbs.
HAPPY READING!!!!

First Day of Stations and iPads!
Here are some thoughts from our first graders about our first grade stations and using iPads in the classroom for the first time!
"It was really fun! I had a lot of fun with Keegan. We were playing Doo Doo Lite. We were counting numbers." said Bradyn
Katelyn said, "Gavin told me to 20 tally marks and then I told Gavin to do 17. We were using the iPads. It was really cool cause you could change the colors of the tally marks! The tally marks could change colors if you press the three pens on the bottom a couple of times."
Gavin said, "I made Katelyn do 20 tally marks. It was fun watching the videos when were are done."
Gavin also said, " I looked at the pictures and found which one I want and then I found some I wanted. I wrote them on my paper."
"You have to write the people words in the web. It was fun!", Isabel said.
Lily and Emma said, "We are listening to the penguin story. We liked when he grew up! It was fun reading and listening on the iPad!"
Sienna and Rachel said, "It was really fun using the iPad. We were taking turns. We were pressing the arrow to take turns turning the page."
"I like stations. I am excited about trying iPads!", said Grace.
Avery said, "Kate told me to make 7 tallies. I told Kate to make 10 tallies. It was really fun. We had a good time!."
